F1, F1B, F1BB, F2, F2B, F2BB, F3, Multi-Gen, Let’s See What the Fuss Is All About.

Before diving deep into the meaning of these Goldendoodle Generations. Let’s find out more about these alphabets like ‘F’, ‘B’, ‘BB’ and numbers such as ‘1’, ‘2’, and ‘3 with the help of the below chart.

A question arises in every dog lover’s mind. Why do dog breeders need that many crossbred Goldendoodle Generations? Why are dog breeder’s not satisfied with F1 Goldendoodle Generation?

Simply put, pairing between F1 Goldendoodle Generation with the same F1 Goldendoodle must be enough. Let the happy family grow forever.

The main reason for this genetic engineering is to create the Goldendoodle Generation which possesses hypoallergenic and low-shedding tendencies.

Although a crossbred dog is stronger than its parents owing to hybrid vigor. But further crossbreeding makes them low shedding and hypoallergenic. We will explain hybrid vigor later in the article.

Goldendoodles Generations Terminology In Detail

Although, we have given you a chart above to understand the meaning of the alphabets and numbers used in Goldendoodle Generations terminology. Let’s further dissect each term in detail.

What IS The Term ‘F’?

‘F’ means Filial. In biology Filial means “denoting the offspring of a cross”. Basically, in Goldendoodle Generations, it means crossbred of two purebred dogs. In our case a mix between a Poodle and a Golden Retriever.

What Are These Numbers ‘1’, ‘2’, and ‘3’?

The numbers here indicate the generations of Goldendoodle.

1 = 1st Generation

2 = 2nd Generation

3 = 3rd Generation

What Is The Term ‘B’?

In Goldendoodle Generations ‘B’ means backcross. There are many different backcrossing techniques that can be used to create your perfect Goldendoodle dog. One of these will result in a “B” at the end which means you’re breeding this current generation with one of its purebred parents.

In the making of Goldendoodle Generations, breeders mostly backcross with a Poodle instead of

a Golden Retriever. The reason for this will be discussed broadly later in the article.

Let’s Understand Goldendoodle Generations With the Help Of a Chart

We hope the below chart will give you a bird’s eye view into the Goldendoodle Generations.  Wherever you get stuck in the article, you can refer back to this chart.

The figures of DNA dispositions are by no means accurate; they may vary in the same generation of dogs. They are theoretically estimated figures.

The Best Explanation For F1 Goldendoodle Generation

The Goldendoodle Generation begins with F1 Goldendoodle, a cross between the Golden Retriever and the Poodle, this is the first pairing. Since F1 Goldendoodle are genetically evenly diverse.

They are not as less shedding and allergy friendly as Poodles are. The F1 Goldendoodle will likely be more prone to shedding and allergy. Genetically F1 Goldendoodle possessed 50% of the Golden Retriever’s DNA. And it is just because Golden Retrievers are not less shedding and allergy-friendly dogs.

The F1 Goldendoodle is genetically evenly diverse, therefore, we can not predict the coat types and colors of the F1 Goldendoodle. The coat can vary greatly, it can be straight, wavy, or curly. The same thing can be said about their colors as well.

Despite having tendencies of shedding and allergy F1 Goldendoodles are very reliable dogs. The hybrid vigor makes them very strong and healthy compared to purebred dogs. They are less prone to many other diseases which their purebred cousins suffer in their lifetime.

F1 Goldendoodle generation

The Best Explanation OF F1B Goldendoodle

F1B stands for 1st Generation Backcross. Here F1 = First Generation and B = Backcross.

When you breed an F1B Goldendoodle with a Poodle, you get this beautiful generation of Goldendoodle.

Technically speaking we can also backcross with a Golden Retriever. But practically speaking it is quite rare. Because these generations are developed to make Goldendoodles less shedding and hypoallergenic.

Once F1B Goldendoodle is bred with a Poodle the resulting generation inherits more Poodle traits than Golden Retriever.

 F1B Goldendoodle’s coat is more curly and wavy than F1 Goldendoodle and they are somewhat hypoallergenic too. F1B Generation has around %85 Poodle’s DNA in them which is the reason behind these Poodle-like traits.

F1B Goldendoodle generation

The Best Explanation OF F1BB Goldendoodle

The Goldendoodle is one of the most popular dog breeds in America, with its amiable personality and intelligence. But if you’re allergic to their hair fall or have trouble with shedding fur. Then an F1BB Goldendoodle could be perfect for your family,

As an F1BB Goldendoodle Generation hybrid (meaning it has 82%-83% Poodle’s DNA and 12%-13% Golden Retriever’s DNA), they are backcrossed twice with a purebred Poodle.

The first time around they carry much of the allergy traits from their parents who carry genes for allergies. The second time around they carry less diversified crossbred genetics which can reduce problematic traits like too much coat shedding.

Less genetically diversified means they are more like a Poodle in traits. Physically they also look like Poodle. They have curly hair too like a Poodle.

F1BB Goldendoodle generation

The Best Explanation OF F2 Goldendoodle

Simply put, it is the offspring of two 1st Generation (F1) Goldendoodles. The Second Generation is commonly known as the F2 Generation. When breeders try different combinations then this F2 Generation becomes a little difficult to understand.

The F2 generation can also be bred through different combinations like breeding an F1 Goldendoodle with F1B Goldendoodle. The Second generation can also be combined with the F1 generation, the offspring will still be called the F2 generation.

The F2 generation does not have hybrid vigor like an F1 Goldendoodle. Although Poodles and Golden Retrievers’ DNA is evenly balanced in F2 Generation just like F1 Generation.

We cannot predict the different traits of the puppies as well. They might have curly hair like a Poodle or straight hair like a Golden Retriever, secondly, we cannot say for sure whether they will be hypoallergenic or not.

F2 Goldendoodle generation

The Best Explanation OF F2B Goldendoodle

We backcross The Second Generation (F2) Goldendoodle with a purebred Poodle, that is how we create an F2B Goldendoodle. We also call it Second Generation Backcross (F2B Goldendoodle). Now we can easily understand that the resulting breed would be closer to a Poodle than a Golden Retriever.

The Poodle traits make Second Generation Backcross Goldendoodle more likely to be allergy-friendly than an F2 Goldendoodle. And perhaps this is the most likely reason for this backcrossing with a Poodle rather than with a Golden Retriever.

This backcrossing with a Poodle also makes the coat of the Goldendoodle very curly like a Poodle. Which sometimes becomes very messy. It is a tiresome job to handle the curly hair of an F2B Goldendoodle.

F2B Goldendoodle generation

The Best Explanation OF F2BB Goldendoodle

The Second Generation F2BB Goldendoodle is a double backcross to purebred Poodle. The breeders have developed it by simply crossing an F2B Goldendoodle to a purebred Poodle.  As a result, we end up getting this very less shedding and allergy-friendly dog.

With its large amounts of Poodle genetics, the F2BB Goldendoodles are extremely likely to have a curly coat that needs brushing every day and groomed about once or twice per month in order for their fur not to mat.

This makes this generation great for people who suffer from severe allergies but also want pets without all those pesky shedding issues.

F2BB Goldendoodle generation

The Best Explanation OF F3 Goldendoodle

We cross F2 Goldendoodle with another F2 Goldendoodle, that is how we create The Third Generation of Goldendoodles, this is the most common way to create F3 Goldendoodles. We can also cross F1B with a different variety of F1B Doodles.

The Third Generation of Goldendoodles is also a Multi-generation Goldendoodles. The Multi-Generation Goldendoodles have traits that belong to more than one Goldendoodle generation. They are the mix of the mix.
